Do tampons obstruct the intercourse?
Natalie, 16: When I have my period and wish to sleep with my boyfriend, it always gets on my nerves totally, that I have to pull out the tampon. Because then it is always so dry at the beginning. But now I have heard, that there are tampons, which can stay inside. Is that right? Doesn't my boyfriend push against it? How do they work and where can I get them?
Dr-Sommer-Team: The new Soft-Tampons aren't contraceptives!
Dear Natalie, you are right, since a short time the so called Soft-Tampons are on the market. They had been developed especially for the case, to stay in the vagina during the intercourse. In addition the are very suitable for wearing in the sauna, during sports etc. Whether you nor your boyfriend will feel anything - when the tampons are inserted properly. The light tampons (only two grams weight) are namely made out of a smooth, flexible sponge-material and sterile single packed. They should be also very skin-friendly and able to absorb an amount of liquid larger than average. But the insertion of the new Soft-Tampons needs indeed a little time of adaptation. The package insert informs detailed about that. For girls, who haven't had an intercourse yet and have no practice with normal tampons, the Soft-Tampons aren't (yet) to be recommended. They have to be removed after about 4 to 6 hours and may not stay in the vagina more than 8 hours (the same as with the normal tampons). They are definitely not for several uses! The Soft-Tampon have to be changed immediately after an intercourse without condom. Moreover the Soft-Tampons are naturally not contraceptives!
